A Cozy German Lunch at the Alpine Inn

Hill City, South Dakota
If you’re exploring the Black Hills, make sure to carve out time for a meal at the Alpine Inn in Hill City. This charming spot is more than just a restaurant—it’s a local institution with serious character and unforgettable food.
We stopped in for lunch on a rainy afternoon and were lucky to grab a table. The place was packed, and from what we could tell, that’s pretty normal. Be prepared for a bit of a wait, and bring cash—they don’t take cards!
The Alpine Inn is known for its German-inspired fare, and we couldn’t resist the German platter. It came piled high with flavorful bratwurst, sauerkraut, red cabbage, and spaetzle, all topped with a rich brown gravy. It was comforting, delicious, and very filling. They also had a variety of German entrees, sandwiches, soups, and salads on the menu—but honestly, we were all too focused on the sausages to explore much else!
The cozy alpine décor and small-town vibe made it feel like stepping into a Bavarian mountain inn, right in the middle of South Dakota. There’s a story behind this place too—the building was originally the Harney Peak Hotel and has been operating as the Alpine Inn since 1984. It’s family-run and full of history and heart.
We didn’t have room for dessert, but we all wish we had. (Next time, we’re making space for their legendary homemade sweets!)
