A Day in Kruje

Old Bazaar, Castle Views, Silver Shops & Where We Ate
Krujë was one of the places I was most curious about before our Albania trip. Just north of Tirana, this historic mountain town is known for its castle, its connection to Albania’s national hero Skanderbeg, and the Old Bazaar that winds below the castle area.
Before we went, I put together a Krujë checklist of the places I hoped to visit. After spending a day and night here, this post is the more personal version what we actually did, what I loved most, where we ate, where we stayed, and what I would recommend if you are planning your own visit.
Krujë is often visited as a day trip from Tirana, but I am glad we stayed overnight. It gave us time to wander the bazaar slowly, shop for something meaningful, have lunch with a view, enjoy an amazing dinner near the castle area, and experience the town without feeling rushed.
Is Krujë a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
Krujë is not currently a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it is still one of Albania’s most historically important towns. Its significance comes from its connection to Skanderbeg, the 15th century Albanian leader who resisted the Ottoman Empire and became a symbol of Albanian identity.
Even without UNESCO status, Krujë feels deeply connected to Albania’s history and traditions. The castle, museums, Old Bazaar, craft shops, and mountain setting all make it one of the most worthwhile stops near Tirana.
The Old Bazaar of Krujë
The Old Bazaar was my favorite part of Krujë.
Set below the castle, the bazaar is a narrow cobblestone street lined with traditional wooden storefronts. The shops sell rugs, textiles, antiques, copper pieces, souvenirs, traditional clothing, handmade crafts, traditional wool items, and silver jewelry. It is not a huge bazaar, but that is part of what makes it so charming.
This is the kind of place where I think it is better not to rush. It is beautiful for photos, but it is also worth slowing down and actually looking inside the shops. Some places feel more souvenir focused, but others still feel connected to traditional Albanian craft.
I loved the mix of history, mountain town atmosphere, and small details. The cobblestones, the shopfronts, the textiles hanging outside, and the view of the bazaar tucked below the castle. If you are visiting Krujë, I would make the Old Bazaar one of your main stops.

Shopping for Silver at Silver & Philigrame Berhami
Before our Albania trip, I knew I wanted to bring home a piece of silver. I did not want just any souvenir. I wanted something small, wearable, and connected to the place.
My favorite shop in the Krujë bazaar was Silver & Philigrame Berhami. This is where I bought my silver pendant and earrings, and it ended up being one of my favorite stops in the bazaar.
Silver filigree has a long tradition in Albania and across the Balkans. The craft is known for its delicate, lace like look, created by shaping very fine silver threads into detailed patterns. In Albania, silver filigree has often been used in jewelry, decorative pieces, and traditional dress, making it one of the country’s most beautiful handmade crafts.
The process is slow and detailed. Thin strands of silver are twisted, curled, and shaped into small designs, then carefully soldered together to create the final piece. The result is jewelry that feels light and intricate, but also deeply connected to traditional craftsmanship.
What made Silver & Filigrame Berhami feel special was not just the jewelry itself, but the story behind it. We were told that the family has been making silver for three generations, which made the pieces feel even more meaningful. The shop carries handmade silver jewelry and filigree pieces that feel connected to Albanian craft rather than a typical souvenir stand.
For me, this was exactly the kind of travel purchase I love most. Something beautiful, easy to bring home, and tied to a real place and memory. Every time I wear the silver I bought in Krujë, I will remember walking through the Old Bazaar and finding this little shop.
If you are hoping to bring home something special from Albania, I would make time to stop at Silver & Filigrame Berhami.

Visiting Qeleshe Punues Hyseni
Another memorable stop in the bazaar was Qeleshe Punues Hyseni.
This shop is connected to the traditional Albanian qeleshe, also called the plis, the white felt cap worn in Albanian culture. The shop is also known for handmade wool slippers, which were some of the most interesting traditional items we saw in the bazaar.
I loved this stop because it added another layer to the Krujë bazaar experience. It was not just about shopping for souvenirs. It was a chance to see traditional wool craft still being carried on in the heart of the market.
Even if you are not planning to buy a qeleshe or slippers, I think this is worth seeking out. It gives the bazaar more depth and shows why Krujë is such a good place to look for traditional Albanian craftsmanship.

Lunch with a View at Hotel Panorama
One of the best decisions we made in Krujë was having lunch at Hotel Panorama.
The view from the restaurant looks down over the Old Bazaar, and we were lucky to get a table with that incredible perspective. From above, you can see the bazaar’s rooftops, the winding market street, and the landscape beyond town.
I would highly recommend making a reservation if you want to eat here, especially if you are hoping for a table with a view. We were lucky to get one, but I would not count on that during a busy time.
Even though we did not stay at Hotel Panorama, this is where I would recommend staying in Krujë. The location is excellent, the views are incredible, and the parking garage would make visiting much easier. Parking in Krujë can be tricky, and after dealing with parking challenges near our accommodations, I understood how valuable that would be.
If I returned to Krujë, Hotel Panorama would be my first choice for where to stay. I cannot review it as an overnight guest, since we only ate lunch there, but based on the location, parking, and views, it is the hotel I would suggest looking at first.
Dinner at Restaurant Bardhi
For dinner, we ate at Restaurant Bardhi, and it was amazing.
The restaurant is located near the castle area, which made it an easy choice after spending the day exploring Krujë. I loved that we could stay close to the historic part of town and end the day without needing to drive somewhere else.
After wandering the bazaar, shopping for silver, and having lunch with a view, dinner at Restaurant Bardhi felt like the perfect way to finish our day in Krujë. If you are staying overnight, I would absolutely add it to your plans.

What to Do in Krujë
If you are planning a visit, these are the Krujë stops I would focus on: walk through the Old Bazaar, visit the castle area, stop into the Skanderbeg Museum if you want more historical context, shop for traditional crafts or silver, visit Qeleshe Punues Hyseni, have lunch with a view at Hotel Panorama, and stay overnight if you want a slower experience. If you have more time there other things to see on my Kruje checklist.
Krujë can be done as a day trip from Tirana, but I think it deserves more than a quick stop. Even one night gives you time to enjoy the town in a more relaxed way.
Is Krujë Worth Visiting?
Yes, Krujë is absolutely worth visiting, especially if you are interested in Albanian history, traditional crafts, castle towns, and scenic views.
For me, the best part of Krujë was not just one single sight. It was the combination of the Old Bazaar, the castle setting, the silver shop, the qeleshe and wool craft shop. We enjoyed lunch overlooking the market, dinner at Restaurant Bardhi, and the feeling of being in a place that still holds onto its traditions.
Krujë is close enough to Tirana to visit easily, but it feels very different from the capital. If you are planning an Albania itinerary, I would include Krujë and if you have time, I would stay overnight.
Final Thoughts on Our Day in Krujë
Our day in Krujë ended up being more memorable than I expected. I went for the bazaar and the history, but what I loved most were the small details. Finding silver to bring home, visiting a traditional qeleshe shop, sitting above the bazaar at Hotel Panorama and having dinner at Restaurant Bardhi. I also liked giving ourselves time to wander without rushing.
Krujë is not a place that needs to be overplanned. Give yourself time to walk, shop, eat, and look around. That is where the charm is.
For anyone visiting Albania, Krujë is an easy and worthwhile stop from Tirana and a great place to experience a mix of history, craft, food, and mountain town atmosphere.
