Easy Sauerkraut and Sausage Bake

This easy sauerkraut and sausage bake is always a hit! The key to the best flavor is using a good quality, refrigerated sauerkraut it makes all the difference. The sweet and savory combination, along with a rich brown gravy, perfectly balances the tanginess of the sauerkraut. Serve it with mashed potatoes, brown gravy, or even on a bun for a delicious meal.
Ingredients for Easy Sauerkraut and Sausage Bake:
- 32 ounces sauerkraut in liquid (drained).
- 2 lbs bratwurst or your favorite sausage. I like Polodori Sausage
- 1 can Campbells French onion soup
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 packet Pioneer brown gravy mix (for serving)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- In a Dutch oven or oven-safe dish, combine the drained sauerkraut, French onion soup, and brown sugar. Mix well.
- Add the bratwurst to the pot, nestling them into the sauerkraut mixture.
- Cover and bake for 1 hour.
- Remove the lid and bake for an additional hour (30 minutes to one hour, keep an eye on it), allowing the flavors to meld and the sausages to brown slightly and the liquid to cook down. Check it to make sure it isn’t burning during the second hour.
- Meanwhile, prepare brown gravy according to package instructions.
- Serve the sausage and sauerkraut with mashed potatoes and brown gravy—the gravy helps cut the sourness of the sauerkraut. You can also enjoy it on a bun for a delicious sandwich.
