Panarea: Things to See, Do, Eat & Experience

Panarea: Things to See, Do, Eat & Experience

Panarea may be the smallest of the Aeolian Islands, but it’s also the most glamorous. Frequently visited by VIPs and yacht owners, the island blends prehistoric history with a lively nightlife and stunning natural beauty. By day, explore quiet coves and archaeological sites; by night, join in moonlit beach parties or sip cocktails with sea views. These are all things I hope to experience when we visit Panarea this fall.

Beaches

  • Cala degli Zimmari – A perfect sandy beach, often considered the prettiest on the island. Its turquoise waters and soft sand make it a favorite swimming spot.
  • Cala Junco – One of Panarea’s most photographed bays, framed by striking rock formations and turquoise water. A popular spot for sunbathing, swimming, and evening gatherings. Here is more info on Cala Junco

Sites & Experiences

Villaggio Preistorico (Prehistoric Village)

  • Bronze Age ruins tucked behind the port. Wander among the oval stone huts and imagine daily life here thousands of years ago. Here is more info on this prehistoric village.

Hidden Coves

  • Beyond Zimmari, Panarea is dotted with secret swimming holes and tiny bays, perfect for exploring by boat or dinghy.

Nightlife

  • Panarea is famous for its after-dark scene:
    • Bar da Carola – Popular with the yacht crowd, especially for an Aperol spritz at sunset.
    • Raya Club – The island’s most iconic nightclub, where DJs keep the party going until dawn.
    • Cala Junco Beach Parties – Moonlit gatherings with bonfires, limoncello, and music beneath the stars.

Note: Most restaurants and clubs require reservations during peak season.

Dining Highlights

Villages & Hamlets of Panarea

1. San Pietro (the main village)

  • The heart of the island and where most visitors stay.
  • Located on the eastern side, close to the port.
  • Full of whitewashed houses, bougainvillea, boutiques, and restaurants.
  • Home to the Church of San Pietro and the lively harbor.

2. Drauto

  • A smaller residential hamlet south of San Pietro.
  • Known for its lava cliffs and rocky coastline.
  • More peaceful, with a few villas and scenic walking paths.

3. Ditella

  • A quiet cluster of houses north of San Pietro.
  • Overlooks the sea toward Stromboli — gorgeous views at sunset.
  • Famous for its thermal springs nearby.

4. Iditella (sometimes written as a variant of Ditella)

  • Often grouped together with Ditella but considered a small distinct hamlet.
  • Another peaceful residential area with coastal views.

Panarea is all about atmosphere — even the tiniest clusters of houses feel special with their whitewashed walls, sea views, and flowers.

Marinas & Anchoring

  • Panarea has limited docking facilities, but its proximity to secluded bays makes it a favorite for yachts and sailing boats.
  • Anchorage is possible near Cala Zimmari and Cala Junco, though expect crowds in high season.
  • Buoy Field “Sea Panarea srl”
