Borough Market is one of London’s oldest food markets, with a history that stretches back over 1,000 years. It has operated in various forms since at least the 12th century, originally serving as a wholesale market supplying fruit, vegetables, and grains to the city.
Today, Borough Market is known for championing artisan producers, traditional food making methods, and an incredible mix of global street food. It’s often described as the heart of London’s food scene where British food heritage meets international flavors. It is a foodies delight.
My Experience Visiting Borough Market
We arrived around 2:00 in the afternoon, and at first, the market felt extraordinary.
Everywhere I looked there was something tempting: giant pans of paella, rich mushroom risotto, chocolate covered strawberries, Italian Pasta, stalls that each specialized in one perfect dish. There were beautiful produce stands and small shops selling things like olive oil and specialty ingredients. From a purely visual standpoint, it was food lover heaven.
But the Crowds were Overwhelming
It was truly shoulder to shoulder, so crowded that it was difficult to even walk up to a stand. Lines for food were incredibly long, and I found myself unable to really browse or take in the details of the market. Instead of lingering and exploring, I felt like I was constantly being pushed along by the flow of people.
We did decide to wait in line for fresh pasta, and it was absolutely worth it delicious, comforting, and clearly made with care. But by the time we finished eating, I was feeling anxious to leave. Despite how special the market is, I didn’t feel like I had really experienced it.
I walked away with mixed emotions, impressed by how unique Borough Market is, but disappointed that the crowds made it hard to enjoy.
Was It the Time of Year or Is It Always This Busy?
I still don’t know whether the intense crowds were because it was the week of Christmas, when so many people are on vacation in London, or if Borough Market is simply this busy most afternoons. It may have been a combination of both.
A Tip for Visiting Borough Market
I would absolutely try visiting again but next time, I’d do it differently. I would Arrive right when the market opens.
Early mornings are said to be much calmer, giving you the chance to actually see the stalls, talk to vendors, and sample food without standing in long lines. I have a feeling that timing alone could completely change the experience.
So, Is Borough Market Worth It?
Yes, with realistic expectations.
Borough Market is iconic for a reason, and the food truly is exceptional. But if you visit in the middle of the afternoon, especially during peak travel seasons, the crowds can overshadow the experience.

The market’s hours vary by day, with earlier opening times on Saturdays, which can make a big difference if you want to avoid the heaviest crowds.

If I visit again, I’ll plan to arrive right when the market opens, using the website to confirm hours ahead of time. Going early seems to be the best way to experience Borough Market at a slower pace, before the crowds take over.
Next time, I’m setting my alarm and going early. I suspect that’s when Borough Market truly shines.
