A Walk to Minnewater Park in Bruges

While exploring the historic streets of Bruges, we took a short walk south of the city center to visit Minnewater Park. The park was an easy addition to our day of sightseeing and ended up being one of the most peaceful places we visited in Bruges.
From the main historic sights, the walk only took about ten to fifteen minutes. The busy streets gradually became quieter, and soon we arrived at Minnewater, often called the “Lake of Love.”
We first walked through the park during the day while exploring the city. Swans drifted across the lake, people strolled along the paths, and the tree lined shoreline made the whole area feel calm compared to the lively squares and canals in the center of Bruges.
Later that evening, while the city was celebrating Wintergloed, we returned to the lake. At night the park felt completely different. Lights from the surrounding buildings and pathways reflected across the still water, and the illuminated church spires of Bruges glowed softly in the distance. The calm surface of the lake mirrored everything around it, creating one of the most beautiful nighttime scenes we experienced in the city.
Lake of Love
Minnewater is often called the “Lake of Love,” and there is a local legend behind the name. According to the story, a young woman named Minna fell in love with a man named Stromberg, but her father did not approve of the relationship. Minna ran away into the forest, and when her lover finally found her, she had died from exhaustion. Stromberg buried her beneath the lake, and the place became known as the Lake of Love. Like many old stories in Bruges, the legend is part of the romantic folklore that surrounds the city.
Standing along the edge of the lake, it’s hard to imagine that this peaceful place once served a much busier purpose. In the Middle Ages, the Minnewater area was part of Bruges’ harbor system, where trading boats once arrived carrying goods into the city. Today, instead of small boats shuttling cargo, you’ll find quiet walking paths, swans on the water, and one of the most relaxing parks in Bruges.
Near the lake you’ll also see Minnewater Castle, a small castle like building that looks as though it belongs in a fairy tale. Despite its medieval appearance, it was actually built in the early 1900s and today operates as a restaurant.
Minnewater Park is also located very close to Beguinage, another historic area of Bruges that is well worth visiting while you’re nearby.
If you’re spending time exploring Bruges, the short walk to Minnewater Park is definitely worth it. It’s an easy stop to add to your day and offers a peaceful side of the city that feels just a little removed from the busy historic center.
