Galeries Royales St. Hubert, Brussels
The Galeries Royales St. Hubert is just a short walk from Grand Place, and it’s easy to miss if you’re moving quickly through the city. But once you step inside, everything slows down a little.
The covered passageway stretches out under a glass ceiling, lined with chocolate shops, cafés, and small boutiques. Even on a gray day, the light filters in and gives the whole space a soft glow.
A Little History
The galleries opened in 1847 and were one of the very first covered shopping arcades in Europe. At the time, this was a new idea. Creating a place where people could shop, stroll, and socialize protected from the weather. It quickly became a gathering place for writers, artists, and visitors to the city.
When it opened, it also helped inspire other elegant, glass covered arcades across Europe. This includes cities like Milan and Paris, which later evolved into the grand shopping galleries and even modern malls we know today. Walking through today, it still feels like it was designed for that same purpose. Not just shopping, but lingering.
What It’s Like to Visit
We found ourselves walking through more than once during our stay.
In the morning, it’s quieter and feels almost peaceful. By the afternoon, it fills in with people stopping for coffee or browsing the shops. But the evening was my favorite. Everything feels warmer, and the lighting makes it feel even more special.
It’s not a place you rush through. You notice the details, the storefronts, the way people linger at tables.

This is one of the best places in Brussels to try Belgian chocolate, and there are several well known shops right inside the gallery.

We picked up a small box while we were there, and it didn’t last long.
Easy Stop Near Grand Place
One of the best things about the galleries is how easy they are to fit into your day. They’re just a short walk from Grand Place, so you can stop in as you’re exploring the historic center. Even if you only have 15–20 minutes, it’s worth walking through.
