Hiking in Murren Switzerland

Hiking in Murren Switzerland. This adventure didn’t disappoint. Home to charming villages, and the magnificence of the Swiss Alps they are famous for. With Switzerland being an expensive destination, this trip tries to keep the cost within a reasonable budget while still experiencing everything Switzerland has to offer. The scenic train rides, stunning landscapes, hiking trails, Swiss souvenirs and Swiss fare (cheese and chocolates). Forgot to mention cows with bells. Getting There

We arrived at the airport in Zurich around 10 a.m., ready to begin our train journey to Mürren, Switzerland. Along the way, we made a stop in Lucerne, where we stored our luggage in the convenient lockers at the train station.

From there, it was just a short walk to the iconic Chapel Bridge, the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe. As we strolled across, we admired the 17th-century paintings adorning the interior ceiling. Though many were lost in a 1993 fire, the restored artwork still adds to the bridge’s charm and historical significance.

After exploring the bridge, we returned to the station, retrieved our bags, and prepared for the next leg of our journey—the scenic GoldenPass train from Lucerne to Interlaken Ost. This panoramic route, included with the Swiss Travel Pass, offers breathtaking views of Switzerland’s landscapes. We traveled on the first section of the journey, enjoying the picturesque ride to Interlaken Ost.

Once we arrived in Interlaken we took the regional train to lauterbrunnen. From Lauterbrunnen we followed the signs to transfer to the cable car heading to Grutschalp. In Grutschalp we transferred to the small train that ends in Murren. We reached our final destination for the first portion of the trip Hiking in Murren Switzerland.

Piz Gloria

Tickets for the Schilthorn Piz Gloria are not included with the Swiss Travel Pass and require an additional purchase. Be sure to check the weather forecast before heading up—on cloudy days, the stunning panoramic views may be completely obscured, making the trip less worthwhile depending on your time and budget.

We decided to go up, hoping the clouds would clear, but unfortunately, they didn’t. Still, we had a great time dining at the revolving restaurant and exploring Bond World 007, an interactive exhibit celebrating the James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, which was filmed here.

Having a reservation at the restaurant made all the difference—without one, we likely wouldn’t have been able to get a table for lunch. If you plan to eat there, I highly recommend booking ahead.

Schilthorn Piz Gloria-

Birg Station

Stop at Birg Station on the way back down from Schilthorn and check out the free thrill walk. It is included in the cost of your ticket. The walk is 15-20 minutes. It consists of glass floors, Awe inspiring views, stairs and a tightrope walk.

Jungfraujoch Day

Jungfraujoch is a separate train ticket for this day long adventure to the top of Europe. This is a very expensive train ride but worth it. However, it was really busy.

Trummelbach Falls & Harder Kulm Funicular

Our condo was in Murren. We did these activities on the same day (Trummelbach Falls and Harder Kulm) because we made the journey from Murren down to the Lauterbrunnen Valley. The train and bus fees were covered on The Swiss Travel Pass Trummelbach Falls are a series of 10 glacier fed waterfalls inside of a mountain. It was very loud, wet, and full of steps. The Harder Kulm Funicular, once you get to the top overlooks the towns of Interlaken and Unterseen.

North Face Trail

North Face Trail is a 2.5 hour 4 mile hike passes thru mountain huts and meadows

Gimmelwald Trail

Gimmelwald Trail is 1.5 mile downhill Hike from Murren. Hike down from Murren to Gimmelwald and take the gondola back up to Murren. There are a few cute little shops in Gimmelwald.

The Flower Trail

This trail is a flower adventure. You can discover 150 different mountain flower species. We were all excited to see the Edelweiss

Mountain View Trail

Mountain View Trail Allmendhubel to Grutschalp on the Mountain View Trail.(Approximately 3 hours) Took train from Grutschalp back to Murren

Hotel Blumentals La Grotte

This restaurant was a special treat. We loved it so much we made a reservation there 2 nights. For more information on La Grotte click here

Hotel Edelweiss

This restaurant was charming and had a varied menu that included traditional Swiss dishes. They also had pasta, salad and Cheeseburgers. We ate here two nights as well because the prices were reasonable. For more info Click Here

Helpful Tips

The hiking trails are confusing and sometimes you are no longer certain what trail you are on.  I think its important to be a strong hiker and be able to get down the mountain if your trail changes, Do not hike without a trail map of the area. They are available at most of train stations and gondola stations.

Make sure you have a map with you at all times in the area you are hiking in
