Where to Stay in Rome: Hotel Santa Maria in Trastevere

If you’re visiting Rome and want a quiet place to stay that still feels close to everything, I highly recommend Hotel Santa Maria in Trastevere. We stayed there during our trip, and I absolutely loved it.

The hotel is in Trastevere, a fun and lively neighborhood that feels like a small village inside the city. It’s set in a former 1600s convent and wraps around a peaceful courtyard full of orange trees. Even though you’re right near the busy Piazza Santa Maria, the hotel feels calm and quiet inside.

You can walk to most of Rome’s major sights from the hotel. To save time, we were a short walk to a taxi stand, just a few minutes away. It made exploring easy without ever feeling rushed.

Mornings started with a great breakfast. They had fresh fruit, pastries, eggs, coffee, and more — plenty to get us ready for a full day of sightseeing. In the evenings, they served appetizers and drinks at the bar, which was the perfect way to reflect on our day and relax before heading out to dinner. We were there in December and there were still orange trees in the courtyard.

Trastevere has tons of restaurants and a fun local vibe, especially at night. After dinner, we loved walking back through the cobblestone streets to our hotel. It always felt like a peaceful break from the energy of the city.

The staff was friendly and welcoming. We saw the same people every day, and they were always happy to help with anything we needed. It really felt like staying with friends.

If you want a hotel that’s cozy, quiet, and full of charm — and still close to everything — Hotel Santa Maria is a great choice.
