On a recent drive through Custer State Park, I decided to check out the Game Lodge Campground, and I’m really glad I did—it looks like a fantastic place to stay. Tucked in a grove of mature trees and set along a quiet stream, this campground offers a peaceful, shady retreat just minutes from the park’s visitor center and many of its main attractions.

What stood out immediately was how green and serene everything felt. Many of the campsites are spacious and shaded, with a good mix of RV spots, tent sites, and even cozy cabins nearby. I saw a few areas that backed up to the creek, which would be a dream to wake up next to. There are picnic tables, fire rings, and level pads at most sites. It just had a really calm, relaxing vibe—definitely not the kind of campground where you feel crammed in.

Final Thoughts

If I were camping in Custer, I’d seriously consider Game Lodge Campground. It feels a little more tucked-away and peaceful than some of the others but still gives you super easy access to everything in the park. Whether you’re in an RV or just looking for a great tent site, this would be a great place to call home for a few days of exploring the Black Hills.
