Vulcano: Things to See, Do, Eat & Experience
Visiting Vulcano Island
Visiting Vulcano Island in Aeolian Islands

Named after the Roman god of fire, Vulcano is famous for its steaming fumaroles, therapeutic mud baths, and dramatic black-sand beaches. The island offers a mix of adventure, natural wellness, and unique dining making it one of the most unforgettable stops in the Aeolian chain. Here is what I hope to experience on our trip to Vulcano.

Beaches

  • Characteristic Black-Sand Beaches Created by volcanic activity, Vulcano’s dark beaches are among the island’s most striking features. Spiaggia dell’Asino and Spiaggia Nera
  • Asino Beach A laid-back favorite where you can easily spend the whole day. Swim, sunbathe, and enjoy fresh baked Schiacciata pizza from the beach restaurant. Asino Beach.

  • Start early and climb from Vulcano Porto to the island’s massive crater in about 2 hours. From the rim, you’ll see breathtaking views across the Aeolian Islands.
  • Hiring a local guide (like Guido) adds insight, pointing out hidden fumaroles and geological details.

  • Arrive at dawn to enjoy the pools in peace before the crowds arrive. Don’t miss Laghetto di Fanghi, a smaller hidden mud pit just behind the main one.

Thermal Springs

  • At Porto di Ponente, geothermal energy bubbles up through rocky tidal pools. Soak in the warm waters while waves lap at the shore a natural spa with sea views.
  • Perfect combination: hike the crater at sunrise, visit the mud baths mid-morning, and finish with a soak in the thermal springs.
