Best Photo Spots in Vulcano

Vulcano may be one of the lesser-known Aeolian Islands, but its raw volcanic beauty makes it unforgettable. From steaming craters and black sand beaches to dramatic cliffs and hidden sea caves, this island is a playground for adventurous photographers. Whether you’re hiking to the crater rim or cruising along the rugged coastline, you’ll find plenty of picture-perfect places. We are visiting Vulcano this fall and these are some of the photo spots we hope to visit.

Here are the top photo spots in Vulcano:

1. Gran Cratere (La Fossa di Vulcano)

The island’s crown jewel is the massive crater that dominates the landscape. A hike to the rim rewards you with panoramic views of the entire Aeolian chain — Lipari shimmering in the distance, Stromboli’s smoky plume on the horizon, and the turquoise sea all around. Steam vents and sulfur deposits inside the crater make for surreal, otherworldly shots.

2. Valle dei Mostri (Valley of the Monsters)

A field of strange lava formations shaped like animals, faces, and monsters. It’s a fun and unusual spot for creative photography, with dramatic rock backdrops that look almost sculpted by hand.

3. Black Sand Beach (Spiaggia Nere)

This stretch of volcanic sand near the port is strikingly beautiful, with the volcano looming behind it. The contrast of jet-black sand, deep blue water, and bright skies makes it one of the most photographed beaches on the island.

4. Gelso Lighthouse (Faro di Gelso)

At the island’s southern tip, this lonely lighthouse overlooks cliffs and the distant coast of Sicily. It’s especially atmospheric at sunset, when the sky glows over the sea.

5. Piscina di Venere (Venus Pool)

A hidden gem accessible by boat, this natural pool glows with crystal-clear turquoise water framed by dark volcanic rock. It’s as photogenic from above as it is at sea level. Venus Pool Information

6. Grotta del Cavallo (Horse Cave)

Another highlight of a boat tour, this sea cave is famous for its magical colors. Sunlight reflects into the cavern, creating shades of emerald and electric blue that dance on the water’s surface. More Information Here

7. Thermal Mud Baths (Laghetto di Fanghi)

Vulcano has long been known for its bubbling mud baths and steaming fumaroles near the port. While sometimes closed for safety reasons, they’re an iconic scene on the island — rustic, smoky, and uniquely volcanic. Click Here for more information

8. Capo Grillo Viewpoint

One of the most spectacular viewpoints on Vulcano, Capo Grillo looks out across Lipari and the Tyrrhenian Sea. It’s an incredible place to catch sunrise or sunset, with sweeping panoramas that capture the whole island chain. For more information CLICK HERE.

9. Porto di Levante

The colorful harbor where ferries arrive is surprisingly photogenic, especially with the volcano rising in the background. It’s a perfect “welcome to Vulcano” shot to start your photo diary.

Final Tips for Photography in Vulcano

  • Bring sturdy shoes: Many of the best shots involve hiking volcanic terrain.
  • Golden hour is magical: Crater rim, Gelso, and Capo Grillo are best at sunrise and sunset.
  • Take a boat tour: To access sea caves, Venus Pool, and dramatic cliffs.
  • Pack for the elements: Steam, sulfur, and volcanic dust make Vulcano wild and raw but that’s part of its beauty.

Vulcano is the Aeolian Islands at their most elemental — dramatic, steamy, and unforgettable. Every corner offers a glimpse into the island’s volcanic soul, and with your camera in hand, you’ll capture memories that feel as timeless as the landscape itself.
