Volcano Hike on Stromboli

Hiking Stromboli at night was one of the absolute highlights of our trip. The guided trek takes about two hours to reach the top, where you spend roughly an hour watching the volcano erupt against the dark sky. It’s an incredible sight—lava bursts lighting up the night, with the distant silhouettes of Filicudi and Alicudi visible across the sea.
For the hike back down, I’d recommend bringing your own headlamp. The one provided by the guide was very dim, and having a reliable light makes a huge difference on the steep descent. Good hiking boots are essential, and if you have trekking poles, they’ll make the climb and especially the way down much easier.
Watching Stromboli erupt from the viewing platforms is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and something I’d recommend to anyone up for a good hike while visiting the Aeolian Islands.
