A Candlelit Dinner at Café Diligence in Bruges

A Candlelit Dinner at Café Diligence in Bruges

I made reservations at Café Diligence because it had excellent reviews.

When we arrived, the building felt very Bruges, stepped gable, brick façade, deep red window frames glowing in the evening light. It fits naturally into the street, like it has always been there.

As soon as we walked inside, I noticed the movie poster.

Café Diligence was used as a filming location for the 2008 film In Bruges, starring Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, and Ralph Fienne.

I hadn’t known that when I booked it. I had chosen it purely for the food. Seeing the poster immediately gave the space a different feel, like we had stepped into somewhere familiar without realizing it.

The interior is warm and candlelit. Dark wooden beams cross the ceiling. The tables are sturdy and close together. The walls are layered with framed photos and old objects that feel collected over time rather than staged.

I ordered the Flemish beef stew, the sauce deep brown and slightly sweet from the Belgian beer it’s simmered in. The beef was slow-cooked until it barely needed a knife. On the side were fries and applesauce, a traditional pairing in Belgium.

It was exactly the kind of meal you want after walking Bruges for hours, especially during the cold winter, warm, steady, comforting.

Through the windows, the cobblestones reflected the evening light. Inside, it felt settled and relaxed, the kind of restaurant that doesn’t need to try too hard.

We would defiantly return to Cafe Diligence.
