Photo Spots in Gjirokastër Albania

Gjirokastër, Albania often called the “Stone City” is one of those places that feels like it was made for photography. Between the layered slate rooftops, cobblestone streets, and mountain backdrop, it’s hard to take a bad photo here.

If you’re visiting and want to capture it well, these are the photo spots I have on my list for Gjirokastër, the places that will give you the most memorable images of the city.

Gjirokastër Castle

This is the most iconic viewpoint in the city and an absolute must. From the castle, you get a sweeping view over the rooftops of the Old Town and out into the Drino Valley. It’s the best place to understand the layout of Gjirokastër and capture that layered “stone city” look.

What to photograph: Wide shots of the entire town, the contrast between the stone city and green valley

Best time to go: Late afternoon or sunset for softer light.

The Old Bazaar Streets

The Old Bazaar is where you’ll find some of the most classic Gjirokastër photos. The streets are steep, lined with stone buildings, and filled with small shops selling rugs, textiles, and local goods. It’s one of the most atmospheric areas in the city.

What to photograph: Leading lines down the cobblestone streets, shop fronts and displays, street scenes with people

Tip: Go early in the morning for quieter photos without crowds.

Gjirokastër Obelisk Viewpoint

This is one of the best viewpoints that not everyone talks about. Located just above the town, the obelisk offers a perfect angle looking down over the bazaar and across to the castle. It’s a great alternative to the castle views and often much quieter.

What to photograph: Elevated shots of the Old Town, the castle in the distance, rooftops with depth and layering

Best time to go: Early morning for soft light and fewer people.

Zekate House

Zekate House is one of the most beautiful historic homes in Gjirokastër and a great place for both interior and exterior photos. The architecture is symmetrical and dramatic, and the views from the windows are just as impressive.

What to photograph: The stone exterior and tower design, Interior details like windows and ceilings, framed views looking out over the landscape

Ali Pasha Bridge (Aqueduct)

This is one of the more unique photo spots and worth the short walk outside of town. The bridge sits in an open landscape with hills all around, and it feels completely different from the Old Town.

What to photograph: The structure of the aqueduct, wide landscape shots, scenic countryside views

Tip: Sunset is especially beautiful here, and you might even see goats crossing the bridge.

The Hidden Alleys of the Old Town

Some of the best photos in Gjirokastër aren’t at major landmarks, they’re in the quiet streets you stumble upon. Take time to wander away from the main bazaar and explore.

What to look for: Narrow stone stairways, flower filled balconies, doorways and textures, everyday moments. This is where you’ll capture the most authentic feel of the city.

Panoramic Views Around Town

As you walk through Gjirokastër, you’ll notice viewpoints everywhere small openings between buildings, turns in the road, and elevated paths. Don’t rush past these.

What to photograph: Framed views between buildings, layers of rooftops, and the valley beyond. Sometimes these unplanned stops end up being your favorite photos.

Final Thoughts

Gjirokastër is one of those places where the entire city feels like a photo opportunity. The key is to slow down, wander, and look for different perspectives. If I had to prioritize, I would make sure not to miss the castle for wide views, the bazaar for atmosphere, the obelisk for a quieter viewpoint, and time to explore the back streets. Im looking forward to some good photo spots in Gjiorokaster
