How to Know if the King Is at Windsor Castle

On our recent trip to Windsor Castle, we looked up and noticed something special flying above the castle, the Royal Standard.
At first glance, it may look like just another flag, but at Windsor Castle, the flag tells a story.
When the Royal Standard is flying, it means the King is in residence.
Most visitors know Windsor Castle as one of the most famous royal residences in England, but this small detail makes a visit feel even more memorable. The flag flies from the castle’s Round Tower, and it is one of the easiest things to look for when you arrive.
If the Union Flag is flying, the monarch is not in residence. But if you see the Royal Standard, you are visiting while the King is there.
For us, it made the whole experience feel a little more alive. Windsor Castle is already full of history, ceremony, and royal tradition, but seeing the Royal Standard flying added a moment of “wait, is he actually here?” to the day.
What to look for when you visit Windsor Castle
When you arrive, look toward the top of the castle, especially the Round Tower. The flag flying above it will tell you whether the monarch is currently in residence.
It is a small detail, but it is one of the most fascinating things to notice during a visit to Windsor Castle.
So when you visit Windsor Castle, don’t just look at the walls, towers, and gates. Look up. The flag may be telling you a royal story.
