Manuel Antonio National Park was one of the most beautiful places we visited in Costa Rica.

The park has rainforest trails, wildlife in the trees, and a coastline made up of a series of gorgeous half moon bays. It felt like the kind of place people picture when they dream about Costa Rica. Monkeys, sloths, jungle, and beaches all in one stop.

Why Visit Manuel Antonio National Park?

Manuel Antonio National Park is one of Costa Rica’s most famous national parks, and after visiting, it is easy to understand why.

It is not the largest park in Costa Rica, but it has an incredible combination of scenery. In one visit, you can walk through tropical forest, look for animals in the trees, and end up at a beautiful beach surrounded by green hills.

The coastline was one of my favorite parts. The park has a series of curved, half moon shaped bays that make the whole area feel especially scenic. The water, the sand, and the rainforest all come together in such a beautiful way.

For families, Manuel Antonio is also a wonderful park because it feels very accessible. You do not have to do a long, difficult hike to enjoy it. You can walk the trails, look for wildlife, spend time at the beach, and still feel like you had a real Costa Rica nature experience.

Our Experience Hiring a Local Guide

We decided to hire a local guide near the entrance to Manuel Antonio National Park, and I am so glad we did.

Our guide took us on a walk through the park and helped us spot animals we probably would have missed on our own. In a place like Manuel Antonio, wildlife can be surprisingly hard to see at first. Sloths blend into the trees. Birds move quickly. Monkeys can be high above the trail. A trained eye makes a big difference.

Because we had a guide, we were able to get some wonderful pictures of sloths. He knew where to look and helped point out details we might not have noticed.

If seeing wildlife is one of your main reasons for visiting Manuel Antonio, I would recommend hiring a guide. You can walk through the park on your own, but having someone who knows the area made the visit more meaningful for us.

Wildlife in Manuel Antonio

Manuel Antonio is a great place to see wildlife, especially if you are patient and willing to look carefully.

During a visit, you may see sloths, monkeys, iguanas, birds, and other animals along the trails. We saw sloths, including the mother and baby, and we also saw monkeys during our time in the park.

One thing to remember is that the animals in Manuel Antonio are wild, even though some of them are used to people being nearby. It is important not to feed them or encourage them to come close.

We also saw a monkey steal pizza during our Costa Rica trip, which was funny to watch, but also a reminder of why food and wildlife do not mix. Animals can become bold around people when they associate visitors with food, and human food is not healthy for them.

The best way to enjoy wildlife in Manuel Antonio is to keep your distance, watch quietly, and let the animals stay wild.

The Beaches and Half Moon Bays

The beaches inside Manuel Antonio National Park are beautiful.

What makes them especially memorable is the shape of the coastline. The park has a series of half moon bays, with soft sand, blue water, and forested hills around them. It is such a pretty setting and feels very different from just visiting a regular beach.

After walking through the rainforest, it is wonderful to come out to the beach. This is one of the things that makes Manuel Antonio so special. You are not choosing between jungle and beach. You get both in one place.

Is Manuel Antonio Crowded?

Manuel Antonio is popular, so it may not feel as remote or quiet as some other Costa Rica national parks.

That being said, I still think it is worth visiting. The park is popular for a reason. It is beautiful, easy to access, and offers a wonderful mix of wildlife, rainforest, and beach scenery.

If you want the best experience, try to go early in the day. The morning is usually a better time for wildlife viewing, and arriving early can also help you avoid some of the busiest crowds.

Check the current park hours before you go. Manuel Antonio is typically closed on Tuesdays, but hours and rules can change, so it is always best to verify before your visit.

Arrive early if you can. Morning is a great time to walk the trails, look for wildlife, and enjoy the park before the heat of the day.

Consider hiring a guide near the entrance. Our guide helped us spot sloths and made the visit much more interesting.

Bring water, sunscreen, insect repellent, and comfortable walking shoes or hiking sandals.

Bring a swimsuit if you want to enjoy the beach.

Be careful with your belongings around wildlife. Monkeys and other animals can be curious, especially around food.

Do not feed the animals. Even if they come close, it is important to let them stay wild.

Final Thoughts

Manuel Antonio National Park felt like a perfect mix of rainforest, wildlife, and beach.

It was beautiful, easy to enjoy as a family, and full of those little moments that make a trip memorable. Seeing a mother sloth with her baby, walking through the park with a local guide, and looking out over the series of half moon bays made this one of our favorite stops in Costa Rica.
