Often called the Grand Canyon of Albania, Osumi Canyon was one of the biggest surprises of our trip. I almost skipped it because I thought the only way to experience it was by rafting. I’m so glad we didn’t. Instead, we spent the day discovering breathtaking overlooks, a beautiful waterfall, lunch beside the river, local legends, and some of the most spectacular scenery we experienced in Albania. If you’re staying in Berat, this full day excursion offers much more than just a visit to Osumi Canyon. Between the scenic drive, Bogovë Waterfall, hidden viewpoints, lunch beside the river, and relaxing along the Osum River, it became one of the highlights of our Albania itinerary.
Leaving Berat
Our day began with a scenic drive from Berat, passing vineyards and small villages before the landscape transformed into the towering cliffs of Osumi Canyon. One of the things I appreciated most about having a private guide was that we weren’t simply driven from one destination to the next. Along the way, our guide shared stories about the region and stopped at several scenic overlooks we would have driven right past on our own. Those unexpected stops made the journey just as memorable as the destinations themselves and gave us our first glimpse of what is often called the Grand Canyon of Albania.
Bogovë Waterfall
Our first stop was Bogovë Waterfall, tucked away in a peaceful forest just outside the canyon. After a short walk through the trees, we reached a beautiful waterfall cascading into a crystal clear pool. The water looked incredibly inviting on a warm summer day and quickly became one of my favorite stops. If you’re planning this excursion, bring your swimsuit. Even if you don’t think you’ll swim, you’ll probably wish you had the option once you see it.

Exploring Osumi Canyon
From Bogovë Waterfall, we continued toward Osumi Canyon, stopping at several scenic overlooks along the way. Each stop revealed another incredible view of the canyon. Towering limestone cliffs stretched above the River, and every overlook seemed to offer a different perspective of this remarkable landscape. Standing above the canyon, I realized just how wrong my first impression had been. Before our trip, I assumed Osumi Canyon was simply a destination for rafting. Instead, I discovered a place filled with breathtaking scenery that can be enjoyed whether you ever step into a raft or not.
Legends of the Canyon
One of the things I enjoyed most about having a guide was learning the stories behind many of the places we visited.
One memorable stop was Bride’s Hole (Vrima e Nuses). According to local legend, a young bride was being forced into a marriage she did not want. As the wedding procession traveled through the canyon, she prayed for the mountain to save her. The rock opened, creating a hidden cavity where she disappeared forever. Whether she escaped to freedom or met a tragic fate depends on which version of the story you hear, but the legend has been passed down for generations and gives this beautiful place an air of mystery.
Later in the day, we visited Gjurma e Abaz Aliut, or the Footprint of Abaz Ali. Local tradition says that Abaz Ali, a revered figure in Albanian Bektashi tradition, crossed these mountains on horseback. His horse is said to have left its footprint in the rock, creating the mark visitors see today. Whether viewed as history, faith, or folklore, it is another reminder that Osumi Canyon is more than just a spectacular landscape, it’s a place where nature and tradition are deeply connected. These stories added something special to the day. They reminded me that beyond the dramatic scenery, this region is rich in culture and history.
Lunch at Oasis of the Canyons
One of my favorite parts of the day was lunch at Oasis of the Canyons. Reaching the restaurant required a hike down into the canyon, but every step was worth it. As we descended, the sound of the river grew louder until we arrived at a peaceful restaurant tucked beside the Osum River. The restaurant serves fresh fish caught from the river, and enjoying lunch with the water flowing just a few feet away made for one of the most memorable meals of our trip. The hike is challenging, but short, so wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water, especially during the warmer months.
The Oasis of the Canyons
More Than a Rafting Destination
Before visiting Albania, I assumed Osumi Canyon was simply a rafting destination. During our visit, we didn’t see any rafting trips, but we did see people floating peacefully down the river on tubes. It was a reminder that every season offers a different experience. While spring is known for rafting, summer is perfect for hiking, sightseeing, relaxing by the water, and enjoying the canyon at a slower pace. If rafting isn’t your thing, don’t let that stop you from visiting. There is so much more to experience here.
Relaxing Along the Osum River
After lunch, our guide took us to another beautiful section of the Osum River where loungers lined the shoreline beside a riverside restaurant. Families were swimming, relaxing by the water, and enjoying the afternoon. We also walked to Ura e Devish Muhametit Hasanaj, a bridge overlooking the river and surrounding cliffs. It was the perfect place to slow down and take in the beauty of the canyon before beginning our drive back to Berat.

From Bogovë Waterfall to the dramatic canyon overlooks and the legends woven into the landscape, this was one of our favorite days in Albania and one I would happily do again.
