A Bike Ride Beyond Cinque Terre Exploring the Ligurian Coast

Most travelers hear about the five famous villages of Cinque Terre—Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso. But on our last trip to Italy, we decided to go beyond these well-known spots and discovered a hidden gem: a seaside bike ride near Cinque Terre Italy, A path through old train tunnels along the Ligurian Sea.

Planning the Bike Ride Near Cinque Terre

While researching our trip, I came across a six mile round trip promenade stretching from Levanto to Framura. I hadn’t heard about it before and didn’t know anyone who had done it, but it looked too good to miss. Since Vernazza was our home base, we planned this as a day trip from there.

Getting to Levanto for Bike Ride Near Cinque Terre

We took a 10-minute train ride from Vernazza to Levanto. From the train station, we walked into town and picked up our bikes at Sensafreni Bike Shop, where I had arranged the rental in advance. The shop has a Facebook page if you want to book ahead.

The Ride Levanto to Framura

From the bike shop, we pedaled to the seaside promenade and followed the path to Bonassola, a scenic 1.5-mile ride. The route continued another 1.5 miles to Framura, passing through old railway tunnels and offering stunning coastal views.

Once in Framura, we parked our bikes and walked through the five small medieval hamlets that make up the village. It was a peaceful and picturesque hillside walk. There’s not much there, but the charm and scenery made it worthwhile.

Lunch & Return

On the way back, we stopped in Bonassola for lunch at Caffè delle Rose, a lovely spot with outdoor seating. You can find reviews and photos on TripAdvisor.

After lunch, we rode back to Levanto, enjoyed some gelato in the town square, and returned our bikes before heading back to Vernazza.

Final Thoughts

This ride was an unexpected highlight of our tripan easy, scenic adventure away from the crowds of Cinque Terre. If you’re looking for a relaxing way to explore the Ligurian coast, I highly recommend adding this bike ride to your itinerary!
