Berat Albania

A List of Sites I Plan to See
Berat is one of those places I keep coming back to while planning this trip. The photos almost don’t look real. White houses stacked along the hillside, windows catching the light, and a castle sitting above it all. It feels like one of those places that is both beautiful and quiet at the same time.
What draws me most to Berat is that it doesn’t feel overly polished. People still live inside the castle. Life continues around the historic sites. It feels like the kind of place you don’t rush through, but instead take your time exploring.
I haven’t been to Berat yet, but this is the list of sites I plan to see when we visit. Some are well known highlights, and others are smaller places that seem worth finding along the way.

Berat Albania Checklist
Mangalem
This is the view that made me want to visit Berat in the first place. The rows of white Ottoman houses stacked along the hillside are what give the city its “thousand windows” name. This is where I imagine just slowing down and walking without much of a plan.
Berat Castle and Observation Deck
The fact that people still live inside the castle makes this feel completely different from other places. It’s not just something to visit, it’s part of the city itself.
I’m especially looking forward to finding the observation deck and seeing the full view of Berat from above.
Gorica Bridge and Gorica Quarter
Crossing the Gorica Bridge seems like one of those simple moments that ends up being memorable. From there, I plan to explore the Gorica side of the river, which looks quieter and more local.
This is also where I hope to find the Church of St. Thomas and Church of St. Spyridon, which seem a little more tucked away.
Holy Trinity Church
This is one of the churches inside the castle that keeps coming up. It looks simple but beautiful, and the setting alone makes it feel worth finding.
Onufri Museum and Ethnographic Museum
These feel like two places that will help me understand Berat beyond just the views.
The Onufri Museum, with its religious artwork, and the Ethnographic Museum, showing everyday life, both seem like meaningful stops.
Helveti Teqe
This is one of the sites that adds another layer to Berat. It represents a different part of the city’s religious and cultural history, which I want to better understand while I’m there.
Mosques of Berat
Berat has several historic mosques that reflect its Ottoman past, and I plan to make time to see a few of them, including:
- Bachelors’ Mosque
- King Mosque
- Lead Mosque
- Red Mosque
Solomon Jewish Museum
This feels like an especially meaningful stop. It highlights Berat’s Jewish history and Albania’s role in protecting Jewish families during World War II.
Panoramic Viewpoint
A viewpoint over Berat feels essential. The beauty of the city seems to come from seeing how everything fits together the houses, the river, and the hills.
St. Demetrius Cathedral and St. Michael Chapel
These seem like quieter stops, but still important in understanding the full mix of religious sites in Berat.
Final Thoughts
This isn’t a complete list of everything in Berat It’s simply what I plan to see.
I’m sure there will be places I didn’t plan for that end up being just as memorable, but having this list gives me a starting point.
Berat feels like one of those places you experience slowly, and that’s exactly what I’m hoping to do.
