Sourdough French Toast

A cozy breakfast that feels a little extra special
There’s something about sourdough French toast that feels a little more elevated than the classic version. The slightly tangy bread paired with warm cinnamon, vanilla, and maple syrup creates the kind of breakfast that feels perfect for slow mornings at home or mornings that we are off to school and busy days.
Whether you’re making breakfast for family, hosting brunch, or just treating yourself on a quiet weekend morning, this sourdough French toast recipe is one worth saving.
Why Sourdough Works So Well for French Toast
Sourdough bread has a sturdier texture than regular sandwich bread, which means it absorbs the custard without becoming soggy. The slight tanginess also balances the sweetness of maple syrup beautifully.
A few reasons I love using sourdough:
- Crisp golden exterior
- Soft custardy center
- Rich flavor with a subtle tang
- Holds toppings well
- Feels rustic and bakery style
Sourdough French Toast Recipe
Ingredients
- Siced sourdough bread, I use Izzio Artisan Bakery
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup whole milk or half and half
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- Butter for the pan
Optional:
- Orange zest
- Powdered sugar
- Fresh berries
- Warm maple syrup
Instructions
1. Make the Custard
In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
2. Dip the Bread
Dip each slice of sourdough into the custard mixture, letting it soak for a few seconds on each side so the bread absorbs some of the mixture without becoming overly wet.
3. Cook
Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add butter.
Cook each slice for about 2–4 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through.
4. Serve
Serve warm with maple syrup, berries, powdered sugar, or whipped cream.
Tips for the Best French Toast
Don’t Rush the Heat
Medium heat allows the inside to cook fully while keeping the outside golden instead of burnt.
Add Extra Flavor
A little orange zest or nutmeg makes this recipe feel even more special.
