A Sweet Baby Shower Idea Bring a Book Instead of a Card

There is something so special about a bookshelf filled with stories that were given with love.

One of my favorite baby shower ideas is asking guests to bring a favorite board book instead of a traditional greeting card. Inside the cover, guests can write a short note to the baby. It becomes such a meaningful keepsake for years to come.

Not only does it help build a beautiful little library for the baby, but those handwritten notes turn simple bedtime stories into memories connected to family and friends. Years later, parents can still open a favorite book and see who gave it and the message they wrote inside.

Board books are also such practical gifts for new parents. Babies and toddlers go through books daily, and having a collection from the very beginning makes story time such a special part of the day.

If you are planning a baby shower, this is such an easy tradition to include on the invitation:

“Instead of a card, please bring a favorite children’s book and write a note inside for baby to enjoy for years to come.”

Board books often cost about the same as a greeting card, but they become something the baby can enjoy again and again. Instead of being tucked away after the shower, they become part of the baby’s first little library.

A Few Favorite Board Books for a Baby’s First Library

  • Dear Zoo
Such a fun interactive book for little ones with lift-the-flap surprises.
  • Llama Llama Red Pajama
One of our favorite bedtime reads with a fun rhythm kids love.
  • Guess How Much I Love You
A sweet classic that makes such a meaningful baby shower gift.
  • Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed
Fun, silly, and always a hit with toddlers.
  • Little Blue Truck
One of my all-time favorites for the illustrations and message about kindness and helping others.
  • Good Night, Good Night, Construction Site
Perfect for little ones who love trucks and construction equipment.
  • Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
A fun alphabet classic with such a catchy rhythm for reading aloud.

I also love that this idea creates a collection of books the family will actually use again and again. Long after the baby shower is over, those stories become part of everyday life bedtime routines, quiet mornings, and favorite books read over and over.

Simple, thoughtful, and something a family will treasure for years.
