Old Town Vlorë

A Quick Walk Through the Historic Side of the City

Vlorë is often known for its beaches, waterfront, and easy access to the Albanian Riviera, but Old Town Vlorë offers a different side of the city. We only had time for a quick walk through this area, but it ended up being a simple and memorable stop during our time in Vlorë.

The streets were colorful and relaxed, with cafes, pedestrian areas, and a nice local feel. We stopped for gelato, wandered without much of a plan, and enjoyed seeing a quieter side of the city beyond the beach.

Independence Monument

One of the most meaningful places we saw was the Independence Monument. Vlorë holds an important place in Albania’s history because this is where Albania declared independence in 1912. The monument stands as a reminder of that moment and gives the area a deeper sense of place. Even during a short visit, it helped connect the city around us to Albania’s larger story.

Muradie Mosque

Nearby, we also saw Muradie Mosque, a historic Ottoman-era mosque in the heart of Vlorë. Built in the 16th century, the mosque has a simple and graceful design, with a dome and minaret that stand out among the surrounding streets. It is one of those places that quietly shows the many layers of history in the city.

Wall Ruins of Ancient Aulon

We also came across the wall ruins of the ancient city of Aulon, the old name for Vlorë. It was a small but fascinating reminder that this city’s history goes back far beyond the modern waterfront and beach scene. Seeing ancient ruins, an Ottoman mosque, and Albania’s Independence Monument all within the same walk made Old Town Vlorë feel layered in a way we did not expect.

We visited a local grocery store, which may sound ordinary, but it is one of my favorite ways to experience a new place. Seeing the everyday foods, brands, and small details of daily life always makes a destination feel more real.

Old Town Vlorë does not need a full itinerary, but it is worth a short visit if you are already in the city. For us, it was a lovely stop for a walk, a little history, gelato, and a glimpse of local life beyond the waterfront.
